My Story

I told myself, “If I can help it, I will never fill out another application again.”

It was really that simple- and one of the first things in my life that I followed through with to completion.

Blackberry Brown is an accomplishment. To you it may be just another small business.

To me, Blackberry Brown is something I birthed, conceived and raised into something that feeds me and provides a roof over my head.

This is my bread and butter.

My last place of employment was just another job to me. I was a phlebotomist (and a damn good one), but beyond that, I was in a position that left limited room for growth, a cap on my pay and what seemed like a regular increase in job requirements minus the appropriate compensation.

Finding myself being forced to choose between getting my employers mandatory flu vaccine and keeping my job was the deal-breaker for me.

I gave them my notice and I was out of there. I told myself, “If I can help it, "I will never fill out another application again.”

I did though. (Fill out applications). I mean, I'm a hustler but that was a bold a** move to resign like that. But like I said, I’m a hustler.

My resilience is one of the better parts about me. I'm intentional about not asking for help, even to the point of having my electricity cut off and traveling to clients “as a courtesy”. (I've really been there and carry no shame in my testimony.)

I've struggled in this life I chose but here I am, nine years after quitting my last job. Ten years of trying to figure “it” out. Ten years of struggle and ten years of growth
